Foot Fungus Fix: Beware Before Bleaching?

Foot Fungus Fix: Beware Before Bleaching?

I read with interest Michael Rothstein’s Practical Pointer, “No More (Foot) Fungus Among Us” (CONSULTANT, August 2002, page 1185). He recommends that patients with onychomycosis soak their feet in a bleach-and-water solution for 10 to 15 minutes twice a day for 2 weeks. Such a solution can dry the skin. Also, warn patients that their skin may shed after a few days; this could be alarming if not anticipated.

The proportion of bleach to water used in this treatment is 2 to 3 capfuls of bleach to at least 1 gallon of water. More bleach—proportionately—is used in a swimming pool than in this solution. Thus, the drying effects are minimal. However, advise patients to inspect their feet for cuts and scrapes before and after each soaking session.
