In this Medical News Minute, prepared exclusively for Patient Care, Dr Bobby Lazzara highlights an important aspect of contract negotiation – restrictive covenants. Some states prohibit them or limit their enforceability, but the point is, know what’s in your contract. For example, if you are terminated without cause and given 30 days’ notice, a restrictive covenant may say you can’t practice within a 1-mile radius of your current employer for up to 2 years, or within a 30-mile radius if you're in a rural setting.
Dr Lazzara’s bottom line: Know the laws in your state and always let your lawyer review any contract before you sign.
