2016 Physician Compensation Survey Results

2016 Physician Compensation Survey Results

The cost of business is going up for physicians, according to this year's Physicians Practice Physician Compensation survey.

Last year, 32.4 percent of physicians estimated that overhead was 41 percent to60 percent of their revenue. In this year's survey, which included 1,095 physician respondents across multiple specialties, that number shot up to 40.4 percent. The percent of those paying a low percentage of overhead (1 percent to20 percent) decreased from 24 percent last year to 16.6 percent this year. Furthermore, 32 percent said that the cost of overhead was greater for them than it was last year.

This rising financial burden may be a problem for many physicians, whose income has stagnated. Nearly 40 percent of respondents said their income was the same as last year, while 28.7 said it went down, and 31.8 percent said it went up. This has, of course, left many physicians disappointed (44.7 percent of respondents).

The Physicians Practice Physician Compensation reveals all of this information and more. For more on the rising costs of overhead, read: "Keeping Medical Practice Overhead Down."

Physicians Practice will have more results from the 2016 Physician Compensation survey and related content in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

GET RID OF ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDS
DO NOT GIVE STATE MEDICAL BOARDS CARTE BLANCHE TO FINE (STEAL FROM)
DOCTORS FOR SIMPLE MISTAKES. WE ARE HUMAN, WE MAKE CHARTING MISTAKES
WE SHOULD NOT BE WRITTEN UP FOR THE PURPOSE OF EMBARRASSMENT.
THE STATE MEDICAL BOARDS SHOULD NOT ABLE TO TAKE AWAY A DOCTORS LICENSE UNTIL TRIED AND PROVEN GUILTY. THE TEXAS BOARD IS THE WORST OFFENDER.
THE STATE MEDICAL BOARDS SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CLOSE DOWN PAIN MANAGE-
MENT CLINICS JUST BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THEM. A LOT OF THESE PATIENTS
HAVE REAL LEGITIMATE PAIN AND THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS IS A NARCOTIC.
BABY BOOMERS ARE ALL AT THE AGE WHERE THEIR SPINES ARE DEGENERATING
AND ESPECIALLY SO BECAUSE THE MAJORITY WERE INTO WORKING OUT AND
IMPACT SPORTS THEY DID HAS TAKEN ITS TOLL ON THEIR BODIES. INSURANCE IS
NOT AFFORDABLE AND DOCTORS SHOULD NOT HAVE THEIR LIVELIHOOD TAKEN
AWAY BECAUSE THEY ARE TRYING TO HELP THEIR PATIENTS. NARCOTICS MAY
TAKE LIVES ACCIDENTALLY BUT SO DO AUTOMOBILES AND WE DON'T TAKE AWAY
CAR DEALERSHIPS FROM THE OWNERS AND FORCE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.
INSURANCE COMPANIES SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REFUSE PAYMENT OF CERTAIN
RADIOLOGICAL STUDIES NOR MEDICATIONS, THEY ARE NOT DOCTORS, THEY
PROMOTE REAL SUFFERING FOR THE ONES THAT PAY THEM.
DOCTORS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TAKE INSURANCE THAT IS BETWEEN THE PATIENT
AND THEIR INSURANCE COMPANY. THE PATIENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT
THEIR BILL IS GOING TO BE AND HAVE THE OPTION TO PAY UP FRONT AND THEN
COLLECT FROM THEIR INSURANCE COMPANIES. THE DOCTOR CAN ACCEPT THE
INSURANCE IF THEY WANT BUT IT TAKES TOO MUCH TIME, THE CONTRACT SHOULD
NOT BE WITH US, IT IS WITH THE PATIENT, THE PATIENT SHOULD KNOW WHEN THE
INSURANCE COMPANY DOES NOT PAY THEIR DOCTOR AND THEY SHOULD HAVE THE
RIGHT TO SUE. A CONTRACT IS A CONTRACT. BUT THERE SHOULD BE A LIMIT ON
WHAT A LAB, PHYSICIAN, ANY MEDICAL CHARGE CAN BE. THE PT SHOULD KNOW
COST BEFORE HAND AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED BY A MEDICAL BOARD
TO DO THIS TEST IN ORDER TO GET THERE MEDICATION. I ACTUALLY RECEIVED A
BILL FROM SUNSET LABS FOR $17,000.00 AND $1600.00 FOR URINE DRUG TEST
WHEN I WAS GOING TO PAIN MANAGEMENT AFTER BRAIN AND SPINAL SURGERY.
ONLY BECAUSE I AM A DOCTOR AND I TOLD THEM I TREAT PATIENTS FOR PAIN AND
THE URINE DRUG SCREEN IS ONLY $64.00 AT OUR CLINIC DID THEY BACK DOWN. I
NOW I HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR BECAUSE I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD
THESE REQUIRED URINE DRUG SCREENS THAT THE MEDICAL BOARDS HAVE
DECIDED KEEPS PEOPLE FROM MISUSING THEIR MEDICATIONS.
THE TEXAS MEDICAL BOARD HAS REQUIRED 3 PAGES OF DOCUMENTATION FOR
EACH VISIT FOR A PATIENT TO GET THEIR PRESCRIPTION. THE TIME IT TAKES FOR
THIS DOCUMENTATION AND TO ENTER IT INTO AN EMR AND GET THE PATIENT TO
URINATE ON COMMAND, MOST CAN'T..ALL COST TIME. THE ELABORATE EXAM
ALSO TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND TIME IS MONEY. NOW THE PATIENTS HAVE TO PAY
$300 FOR AN EXAM DUE TO THE DEMANDS FOR ALL OF THESE REQUIREMENTS
WHICH THE MEDICAL BOARDS HAVE MADE LAW. NOW WE DON'T HAVE PATIENTS
BECAUSE THE OFFICE VISIT IS TOO MUCH.
CONSTANT REQUIREMENTS FOR CME AND THEM RE-CERTIFICATION TOO! PICK ONE
OR THE OTHER.
I WILL CLOSE THIS BY STATING AN OBSERVATION WHICH I HAVE NOTICED OVER THE YEARS...NOW THAT I AM GETTING OLDER AND HAVING TO BE A PATIENT MYSELF EVERY NOW AND THEN...I NOTICED THAT PHYSICIANS ARE NOT AS SMART AS THEY
USED TO BE...I WAS GOING OVER MY MRI WITH NOT ONE BUT TWO DIFFERENT NEUROSURGEONS AND I ASKED THEM WHY I HAD FLUID IN THE MASTOID AREA AND WAS IT SOMETHING CONNECTED TO THE CHIARI I MALFORMATION I HAD OR WAS IT NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT? BOTH SAID THEY HAD NO IDEA - GO TO AN ENT. IT USED TO BE A NEUROSURGEON KNEW EVERYTHING THEY WERE LOOKING AT ON AN MRI OF THE HEAD,NECK AND SPINE...I KNOW THE REASON THEY DON'T NOW AND IT IS DUE TO THE IMMENSE AMOUNT OF TIME WE ARE REQUIRED TO SPEND LEARNING AND WORKING ON THE EMR. THE EMR HAS COST US SO MUCH MONEY, TIME AND NOW KNOWLEDGE. WE USED TO SPEND OUR TIME READING ARTICLES AND DOING RESEARCH BUT WE HAVE NO TIME ANYMORE..WE ARE TOO BUSY TAPPING AWAY OUR NOTES AND TRYING TO FIND THE WHERE THE COMPUTER SAYS WHAT WE KNOW WE WANT TO SAY BUT WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO FREE TEXT. WE SHOULD GO BACK TO PAPER T-SHEETS AND IF WE CAN AFFORD IT HIRE TRANSCRIPTIONS TO ENTER IT INTO AN EMR, BUT THE DOCTOR SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO USE IT UNLESS THEY WANT TO, AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO BUY ONE, ONCE YOU BUY ONE THEN THEY EXTORT YOU WITH THE MAINTENANCE FEES, WHEN IN RESIDENCY WE BOUGHT OUR FIRST EMR FOR $140,000.00. NOW WE COULD SEE ONLY HALF THE PATIENTS WE SAW BEFORE, THE WAIT TIMES WENT UP TO 3 AND 4 HOURS, AND THEN A BILL CAME...A ONCE A MONTH MAINTENANCE FEE...OUR DIRECTOR REFUSED TO PAY BECAUSE HE SAID WE ALREADY PAID FOR IT AND IT WASN'T BROKEN...MIRACULOUSLY IT BROKE IMMEDIATELY THE NEXT DAY. THE PEOPLE WE BOUGHT IT FROM SHUT IT DOWN.
ONE MORE THING. RECRUITING AGENCIES SHOULD HAVE A SET FEE THEY CAN COLLECT AND NOTHING MORE. THEY HAVE MADE EVERYTHING LOCUM AND WE WORK FOR THEM NOT THE HOSPITAL OR CLINIC. AT THEIR WHIM THEY PULL US OFF THE JOB AND THEN WE HAVE TO START LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB AND NOW THE HOSPITAL HAS TO RETRAIN ANOTHER PHYSICIAN TO THEIR EMR, POLICIES, ETC. CREDENTIALING TAKES 6 MONTHS..SO WE ARE OUT OF WORK MORE THAN WE ARE WORKING..THIS IS WHAT HAS COST THE SHORTAGE OF ER DOCTORS. MOST OF US ARE PROHIBITED FROM WORKING AT LEAST 3 TO 6 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR BECAUSE WE ARE WAITING ON CREDENTIALING FOR THE NEW ER OUR AGENCY IS SENDING US TO. THERE IS ALSO LOTS OF DISCRIMINATION BUT TOO COSTLY TO PROVE. THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE THINGS I KNOW THAT HAVE INCREASED THE COST OF MEDICINE AND INCREASED THE WAIT TIMES AND EXPENSE..AND IN THE END WHEN THE EXPENSE GOES UP..AND ITS NOT THE DOCTORS GETTING THE MONEY...ITS ALL THE MIDDLEMEN WITH ALL OF THEIR REQUIREMENTS...HOW DID THEY GET IN BETWEEN US AND THE PATIENT AND THEN START MAKING REQUIREMENTS FOR US TO MEET OR WE CAN'T WORK?...ANYWAY WHEN THE EXPENSE GOES UP THEN PATIENTS STOP COMING, THEY SIT AT HOME SUFFERING AND WE SIT IN OUR OFFICE SUFFERING.

I think you need a therapist and a good practice consultant. 140k for an EMR?

you have touched on very realistic issues
boards are too powerful and even the smallest infraction brings dishonor and tarnishing for rest of you career in a stroke of a pen boards take away the livelihood of doctors in the wake leaving destroyed families depressed and suicidal honest people
