An electric heating pad can burn patientsif they fall asleep while usingit. A safer alternative is a "beanbag"heating pad. After the bag is heatedin a microwave oven for about 30 seconds, the beans retain heat for 15 to20 minutes. Patients can make theirown by sewing together all but aninch of the edges of a folded washcloth. This opening is used to fill the"bag" with dried beans and then isstitched closed.-- Karen Myers, ARNP-C
