To immediately relieve pain from aningrown toenail, tell patients to soakthe affected foot in warm water for3 minutes to make the nail pliable.Next, have them fold a small pieceof tissue paper (about half the sizeof a penny) and carefully wedge itunder the nail with the end of a largeopened paper clip, right at the painfulspot. Every 2 to 3 days remove theold tissue and repeat the process. After 2 or 3 treatments the nail usuallygrows properly and not into thetender toe skin.-- John M. R. Kuhn, MD
