Nitazoxanide (Alinia), from RomarkLaboratories, has been approvedby the FDA for the treatment ofchildren who have diarrhea causedby protozoa. This agent targetsCryptosporidium parvumandGiardia lamblia.

Nitazoxanide is available onlyin liquid form and should be takenwith food. There is no restriction onfood or beverage intake or activityduring treatment.

The most common side effectsare abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting,and headache.
