To help relieve the pain of a sore throat, patients are often instructed to gargle with warm salt water-usually 4 times a day. This therapy is far more effective if the patient gargles for 3 minutes every 15 minutes for 2 hours. The frequent contact of the warm salt solution on the swollen tissues greatly reduces edema and thus pain.
