Advise patients to use moist heat totreat spinal or extremity injuries duringthe first 48 hours. Although dry heatmay feel good, it can cause reboundedema. Moist heat penetrates the skinbetter and helps loosen the fibrosisthat occurs after an injury. Moving theinjured joints through the full rangeof motion following the application ofmoist heat may help reduce such longtermsequelae as chronic fibrosis("trigger points") and somatic dysfunction(which, if chronic, can lead tospondylosis).
