CDC Releases Annual STI Report: Daily Dose

On November 13, 2024, we reported on the US CDC's annual Sexually Transmitted Infections Surveillance report for 2023.

The study

The data presented in the CDC's annual sexually transmitted infections (STI) report includes case notification provided to the CDC through the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System and data collected through projects and programs that monitor STIs in various settings, including the STD Surveillance Network.

The findings

Over 2.4 million cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia were diagnosed and reported in 2023. This includes 1 648 568 cases of chlamydia, 209 253 cases of syphilis (all stages), and 601 319 cases of gonorrhea.

• Chlamydia: Rates did not change substantially between 2022 and 2023 (<1.0% change; from 495 to 492.2 per 100 000).

• Gonorrhea: Between 2022 and 2023, rates declined 7.2% to 601 319 cases after dropping by 8.7% from 2021 to 2022. The CDC noted that this marked a decrease to pre-pandemic levels.

• Syphilis: Between 2022 and 2023, the number of reported cases of syphilis (all stages) increased 1.0%, although the rate of reported cases per 100 000 persons was relatively stable (<1% change, 61.1 to 61.3 per 100 000).

• Congenital syphilis: Between 2022 and 2023, rates increased 2.9% (from 102.8 to 105.8 per 100 000 live births).
