Sometimes, despite compliance with prescribed thyroid medication, a patient's thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level remains high.

 

Sometimes, despite compliance with prescribed thyroid medication, a patient's thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level remains high. To clear up the mystery, ask the patient about other medications he or she takes-including vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter agents. Some of these (eg, iron, calcium, bile salt resins) bind levothyroxine and hinder its absorption.
