Managing Atopic Dermatitis in Special Populations: Expert Insights for Primary Care

Katrina Abuabara, MD, a researcher and dermatologist at the University of California, San Francisco, spoke with Patient Care Online at the 2025 American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting about the biggest takeaways from her presentation on the management of atopic dermatitis (AD) in special populations, including pregnant and lactating women, those with infections, and older adults. Above, Abuabara discusses considerations for determining when to refer patients for systemic therapy versus topical treatments alone and strategies for effective comanagement between primary care physicians and dermatologists. She also provides guidance on navigating treatment options and safety profiles for complex atopic dermatitis patients.
