The annual meeting of the American Academy of Family Physicians is a unique chance to choose continuing education on just about any topic a family physician could imagine.
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) will convene its Family Medicine Experience (FMX) 2025 from October 5–9 in Anaheim, California. The meeting remains the AAFP’s largest annual gathering, combining continuing medical education with opportunities for practice development, networking, and advocacy.
Hundreds of CME sessions are planned across clinical domains relevant to everyday family medicine. Cardiovascular topics anchor the opening day, Sunday, with sessions on acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, arrhythmias, and hypertension. Gastrointestinal pearls, practical approaches to dermatologic conditions, weight management strategies, and a session on navigating health equity round out the Sunday program. There will be Happy Hours and Meet and Greets on Sunday evening, for new physicians and residents, for member interest groups (MIGs) and for AAFP fellows.
On Monday, the agenda highlights respiratory and pharmacology challenges, including acute respiratory failure and deprescribing strategies, alongside sessions addressing women’s health, lifestyle interventions as medicine, burnout prevention, and community health models such as street medicine. There will also be sessions on menopause care for the primary care practitioner, psychiatry in primary care. Procedural offerings like botulinum toxin training are available throughout the week.
A highlight on Monday will be the first of 3 Main Stage presentations, this one by past US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA. That is the only programmed event between 3:30 and 5:00 and promises to be enlightening.
Tuesday’s schedule reads like a day at the office for a family physician with early morning sessions on fundamental and advanced ECG interpretation, severe hypertension, neurodivergent pediatric patients, hypercorticolism, and USPSTF update. Presentations and discussions on Lyme disease, Alzheimer early detection, bug bites, and anxiety disorders follow the morning coffee break. The balance of the day offers courses on leadership development, employment contract guidance, and direct primary care. Dermatology and musculoskeletal procedures, including therapeutic needling and dermal fillers, provide hands-on learning.
The Main Stage event on Tuesday features Natalie Stavas, MD, program director for child protection pediatrics at the University of California San Diego and recognized for her bravery and laser focus as she ran into the aftermath of explosions at the Boston Marathon. She was approaching the finish line herself and rushed the few blocks to the scene that morning to render care.
Wednesday brings a focus on chronic disease and innovation. Family physicians can choose from sessions on self-monitoring blood pressure, evaluation of cirrhosis, osteoarthritis treatment, hyperlipidemia, and gout. A variety of sponsored educational sessions will be available every day and on Wednesday include CDC guidance on use of RSV vaccines, patient journeys in obesity, optimal use of CGM, and early detection and intervention for cardiorenal disease. Other education will be devoted to atrial fibrillation and dementia care sessions, advanced ultrasound training, nail and skin procedures, and discussions on equity and system change in primary care delivery.
The Main Stage from 3:30 to 5:00 on Wednesday will be the province of Frank Domino, MD, returning for his annual presentation, The Top 10 Evidence-Based Medicine Updates of 2025.
The final day of FMX, Thursday, emphasizes bread-and-butter family medicine. Topics include acute abdomen, diabetes updates, migraine management, and pneumonia. Preventive care will be the topic during presentations on ACIP immunization updates, HPV self-collection, and pediatric screenings, while sessions on billing and wellness close the week.
Every year FMX features an expansive Expo Hall, wellness spaces like the Rejuvenation Station and Zen Room, and structured networking events. All registrants receive access to FMX On Demand for 30 days, with upgrade options for extended viewing.
FMX 2025 reflects the evolving priorities of family medicine—balancing evidence-based clinical updates with skills training, practice sustainability, and equity. The program is designed to provide clinicians with immediately applicable knowledge while offering flexibility to pursue personal areas of interest.
