When you examine a young child'sear, have him or her sit sideways onthe parent's lap. Ask the parent tohold the child's exposed arm withone hand and head with the otherhand. Reverse the process to examinethe other ear. Being firmly "cuddled"against a parent reduces thestress of the examination, and manychildren do not even cry.-- Lin Stephens, ARNP
