Patient Care brings primary care clinicians a lot of medical news every day—it’s easy to miss an important study. The Daily Dose provides a concise summary of one of the website's leading stories you may not have seen.
On April 28, 2025, we reported on a study published in The Journal of Breast Imaging that examined the impact of an AI-based system on the diagnostic performance of radiologists in interpreting mammograms.
The study
Researchers retrospectively assessed the Genius AI Detection 2.0 software (Hologic) in 5000 patients who had digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) exams performed between 2016 and 2019. The data set included 500 cancers initially detected by radiologists and 100 cancers that had been missed during initial readings but later confirmed to be malignant.
The findings
The AI program correctly identified approximately 90% of the cancers originally found by radiologists and detected 32% of the cancers that were initially missed. In terms of specificity, among the 4400 exams deemed cancer-free by radiologists, the AI correctly categorized 55% as negative. Investigators also found an overall decrease of 24% in reading time and a reduction in perceived fatigue among radiologists using the AI software.
Authors' comments
"The incorporation of this AI system, capable of handling multiple image type, prior mammograms, and multiple outputs, improved the diagnostic proficiency of radiologists in identifying breast cancer while also reducing the time required for combined interpretive and noninterpretive tasks."
